Work must be done
My oven is still out but my father in law's 60th bday party is Sat. I promised to make two cakes. One will be a center piece and the other specifically for him. He loves raisins so I will be making Rum Raisin cake specially for him.
So the main cake will be a tool box. I got the idea from Cake Central. So I needed to make a 12x12 square. I'm going to cut it in half and stack it. The cake needs to feed 60, so I will be making two cakes and stacking on top of each other. The cake should be about 8" high when I'm done. Anyway, since my oven doesn't work I have to run over to my moms to bake it. Then to add to it I only have 1 square pan that size. Needless to say, I was back in forth today.
Some exciting news today, my sister in law had her first baby. So I was a little distracted trying to find out everything. We did get to visit the new bundle of joy & the her parents in the hospital. She's so tiny and precious. Time flies, I can't remember my girls being that little anymore.
Went to dinner and then back to work. I got my cake board done. I used two pieces of foam board, glued them together. Then the real work begun. I covered the board as a wood flooring. Mixed up different fondant colors to give it some depth. Then rolling, cutting, & positioning. The final piece was some brown ribbon hot glued around the edges.

Cake frustration, disaster, & lots of swear words.
Last week my husband asked me to make a cake for Monday. I had some hesitation being that I was going to be out of town for the weekend. My husband assured me that it was an easy chocolate cake. It needed to feed 75 and just a simple Welcome Baby written on it. He even offered to bake the cakes for me if I told him what to do, what pans to use. So the cakes would be ready for me to frost when I returned home.
So Monday arrives & I'm still tired from the weekend. I beg my husband for 30 more mins of sleep, I didn't have to finish the cake till the afternoon. My phone rings, its a telemarketer, no additional sleep for me. I get the cake board ready ( I use a cake board with foam board hot glued to bottom & ribbon hot glued around the edge, very time consuming), make a couple batches of chocolate icing. I get a text message asking if the cake will be ready by 1 pm. I'll try but no guarantee. My daughter had an orthodontist visit at two. So I'm trying to hurry. I ask my husband if he absolutely has to have a box. He insisted. So I'm running late, instead if going to the cake supply store, I run to Walmart. I left the van running with the AC blasting. Run in, grab a box. I'm folding the box as I'm briskly walking to the van. Get there, get the cake in the box, and the lid slices the top. Ugh, I'm super frustrated by now. Running late cake messed up a little. So now I got to go down town. I'm speeding with my daughter in the car. I call my husband when I'm arriving at the parking lot only for him to tell me that I should be at the other office. I'm am fuming at this moment. He clearly told me this address the night before. Now I have to drive another couple of downtown miles away. Thankfully he's already waiting outside for me. So I get out open the back door to get the cake. Just looking at the box I could tell the cake was ruined. I could read the welcome baby through the grease stain. Ugh, more frustration, I think I was cursing at this point. My husband walks up & I tell him its ruined. He asks are you sure. I tell him it was fine without a box, open the lid half the writing is stuck to the lid. So he says just take it home. WHAT? Your kidding me. I told he should just take it. Give it to them for free after all the I've been trough. He said no just take home. I told him who are we going to feed this 75 person cake to? He called the girl while I waited he opened the door & says just take it & head to the orthodontist. Umm, no, Im late so they won't see her. The office is out of town & I'm down town & now I would never make it. So I'm even more mad now. My husband says you can make her a cake next week. Ugh!
I returned home on Sunday and there were no cakes baked, this was around 6 pm. So then my husband decided since I was home he would finally make the cakes. He started to make the batter and there wasn't enough eggs, so there I go to my mother's to borrow eggs. (thankfully my mother lives 2 streets away) The cakes were finally in the oven. The first timer went off, I moved the cakes from top rack to bottom and vice versa, set the timer again. Second timer went off, cakes still were not done so I set the timer for a third time. Before the timer went off I could smell burnt cake. So I run to the oven, the cake on the top rack was burned on the top, yet still not cooked on the bottom. The cake on the bottom rack was also cooked on the top but raw on the bottom. Ugh, Im looking in my oven trying to figure out what happened. I tried to put my hand near the bottom heat element of my electric oven. I didnt really feel alot of heat. So I used the pot holder to touch it, then I touch the pot holder, it wasnt hot. I touch the pot holder to the top heat element and smoke starts to come off. Darn it my lower heat element burnt out.
My husband wasnt home so I called him to get more eggs and cocoa from the store on his way home, called my mom asking if I could use her oven. He gets home and tells me he wants to take the cake at 8:30 am. I told him that's not going to work. The cake has to cool before I can first it. I mix up the batter, wash out the goopy mess from the pans, What a waste. Take the pans And batter to my moms, let the cakes bake for an hour. I think it was well after 10pm.
I took the cakes home to cool & and went to bed. So Monday arrives & I'm still tired from the weekend. I beg my husband for 30 more mins of sleep, I didn't have to finish the cake till the afternoon.
